This year I took the plunge and sent in an application at the very last hour on the very last day. I made it, or I should say we made it. It is a collaboration really of an idea that came after all my Christmas Bulbs that I had collected since I was a child were accidentally removed from my basement after my old landlord moved all his belongings out. Very sad :(.... Christmas morning I awoke to a custom made wooden box and handmade bulbs that my boyfriend had made me to replace my old bulbs. So happy, I arranged them on my Christmas tree in my storefront at bloom and they were a hit. Last year we sold over 500 bulbs and boxes. If you are interested we will be selling these lovely creations at Handmade Arcade on November 12th at the Pittsburgh Convention Center!

As of May 1st, I will no longer be taking any new clients, unless they are referred by a client or have a gift certificate. I apologize for the inconvenience at this time, but as a result of working over 10 years in this industry I have accumulated a wonderful and large clientele. It has become impossibly difficult to fit everyone in, even working 7 days a week. I strive to provide the very best, most relaxing services that I can and will always adhere to this high standard. I will be taking some time to attend classes, continue my esthetic research and train other estheticians, in addition to attending to my clients.
In the near future I will be adding on a second Esthetician who will be able to take new clients, or clients that I can not accommodate so that I can further extend the "bloom" experience!

Bloom will be selling the ECOCert line Patyka

If you haven't heard of Patyka yet, just wait. I am soon to be exclusively selling the line which in Hungarian means "Apothecary" I have long been looking for a line to compliment the tried and true Rhonda Allison line, and out of the blue I was contacted by a women named Una, who introduced me to the line Patyka. I really was interested in something that was made in France and had a component of Rosewood and other essential oils, and of course Organic. She sent me a few samples and I have to say it works amazingly. I ordered the full line of the Absolis which includes cleansers, toners, creams targeting dry to combination skin. I first became interested in the French method after visiting a few skin guru's in NYC. They explained the importance of using creamy, milky cleansers removed with sterilized cotton and distilled water. This would be gentle enough even for acne skin. But how? I asked. The cleanser loosens the pores and blackheads so that they are washed away on their own. They explained that I shouldn't even wash my face in the shower and to avoid my shampoo getting on my delicate face. I was a full believer when I looked at their 70+ year old skin and thought it looked younger than my own. Since using the line I have noticed my skin is more even and I am not as red as I used to be. I feel like I am being gentle with my delicate skin, and I love the smell of Rose when I go to bed at night. Not to mention the line will be carried at Fred Segal, but you can get it right here at bloom!

Part One: Why Chirality Matters to the Skin?

In last week’s blog post I touched on chirality and how following the science can mean the difference between a powerhouse formulation and one that is mediocre. What is chirality, why does it matter when it comes to skin care formulations, and where can it be found?

In this three-part blog post series, I will shed light on the science behind it and answer those questions.

What is Chirality?

The term chiral is generally used to describe a molecule or material that is non-superposable on its mirror image. Our hands, for instance, are chiral. The left is a non-superposable image of the right. This is evident when trying to use your left hand to shake someone’s right hand…it doesn’t quite fit. Achiral describes a material or object that is identical to its mirror image. Incidentally, the word chiral is derived from the Greek word “kheir,” meaning hand.

Most of the molecules produced in nature are chiral. Chirality is a fundamental property of carbon compounds. Carbon is absolutely essential to life – all organic materials must possess carbon atoms. Every carbon atom has four hands, each of which must be connected to another hand (i.e. another carbon (C), and/or an element like hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), or nitrogen (N)).

The Right and Left Hand

If at least two elements attached to any single carbon atom are identical or symmetrical, these organic materials are defined as “achiral.” However, if none of the elements attached to any single carbon atom are identical, they are “chiral.” Our skin is also chiral, therefore it responds best to chirally correct ingredients.

In our cells all the amino acids (L) are left-handed, no protein in the body will contain a right-handed amino acid. Sugars (D), however, are right-handed. You’ll notice many of the ingredients denote L- or D-forms. Most of the acids and amino acids – Malic, Lactic, Mandelic, Ascorbic, Arginine – use the L-isomers. While many of the skin strengtheners, protectors and hydrators – Tocopherol, Beta Glucosamine, Fructan – use the D-isomers.

For ingredients to be effective they must be isolated to work with the appropriate isomers in our skin, rather than inundate it with both forms, which can lead to unwanted side effects or few results. In the next post I’ll cover where chirality is found and where it comes from.

I never thought the day would come, but it has. Starting July 1st, bloom will offer massage by design with Tasi Handelsman. She has over 10 years massage experience and once you try her you will not want to stop. Also, I know some of my clients have been dying to see the rest of the building and the massage room comes equipped with a beautiful balcony, where Tasi has planted some beautiful flowers and herbs. My trip to Nyc was wonderful last week. Tried to pack in every ounce of the city into two 1/2 days. It worked, but my feet were hurting. I was for sure a tourist. Central Park, The Met, Pinkberry, Magnolia's, Soho House to see the Cowshed Spa. Walked by Julian Schnabel's house (awkwardly took pictures as his wife pulled up), hung out at or on the Highline, Saw Kenley Collins from Project Runway on the L train. My favorite part was a restaurant in Williamsburg called Five Leaves (beautiful design work) Heath Ledger tribute. It was all very inspiring.

Been back to work for a week and still missing the view from Brooklyn...

New Skin Peels!

I have recently started adding new peels to my menu. Try the new rosacea peel, the maui peel, the vita-a-peel (for those who are looking for an alternative to retin A) This peel is equivalent to using retin-A for a year. I truley believe that the secret to younger skin is with peels. I have been using them for 10 years, and believe is extremely beneficial to the skin. The mirrors are made from old barn wood, the easel that I paint on is from road barriers found on the street, the vases with flowers are made out of trim from an old building, my sewing machine was put into an old door and it is even equipped with wheels so I can move it around the room.

My good friend came over last week, because she has started breaking out after years of having unbelievable skin. Let's just say it's hormonal. Anyways, she has developed perioral dermatitis, and has been using a prescription from her doctor for weeks with no success. Not to mention the doctor suggested using dove bar soap. (What!) I was hesitant in giving her a facial, because she was so inflamed, but then I thought I might as well try. I massaged her with Rhonda Allison Skin Calming Gel for a half an hour with steam (this product contains hydrocortisone) I finished with the Blue Gel Mask for rosacea. I also sent her home with an organic baby soap called E. The next day she called and said her skin was completely cleared up.

Well, first I may feel some type of connection due to the fact that my grandfather grew up in Polish Hill But, it is mainly because I am drawn to the area. I found a unique spot at 5220 Butler Street. I wanted a place were people felt at home. Cozy and comfortable. You have to stop in to see what I mean. It is what I dreamed of. I work on my own. My treatment room is in the dining room of this historic house, and I can spend as much time as I want with each client. No one is rushed.....
